LO2 task 2 Treatment

Brief
I have been asked to create a photograph that has something to do with identity, it could have been the identity of me or the identity of something that might be important to me or everyone else.

Concept Idea
The final idea that I want to do is to take picture for the identity of Sheffield, this includes famous/popular places in Sheffield like the Forgemasters building or Meadowhall Shopping centre. To take these picture I will be using different lenses to get different effects like the fish eye lens that will allow you to see the building in a 3D type way and a telephoto lens to capture it at different angles in different places and to also get close up shots and wide shots. I will also be using a depth of field lens in some picture to make the main subject I am trying to portray within the picture look of importance, therefore the important object or landscape will be clear and background will not be.

Target Audience
  • Age- 18+
  • Gender- Male and female but mostly female because stereotypically they are more into art and photography than men.
  • Demographs- BC1, C2, D and E are the group types that are most likely groups to view my images in the exhibition.

Key Milestones
  • Planning-    Friday 17th April
  • Taking photographs-       Friday 8th May
  • Editing photographs-      Friday 22nd May
  • Launch date-        Friday 12th June

Equipment
The equipment that I will need to us when taking photographs like this will be my camera with a standard lens kit, the different types of lens that will be used like telephoto lens, fish eye lens and a depth of field lens. I will also need a Tripod when taking the picture to make sure that there is no movement when the picture is been took, this could effect the quality of the photo. The final thing that I will need is a SD card, this is to record all of my photographs and then put them on th computer for editing.

Props and models
In my photographs props and models weren't considered because I only wanted Sheffield landmarks but if I had models in my photos I would ask someone that is of importance to the city like David Blunkett or the owner of the Steel works within Sheffield. For the props I would be something like the Steel statues located outside Meadowhall Shopping Centre which would connote both Steel works and The shopping centre working together. Another prop would be a bottle of Henderson's Relish which connotes that Sheffield is the owner of the shops that sells it and the factories that makes it.

Health and safety considerations
When looking at Health and safety regulations that is a lot that need to be considered like the location in which the photograph is been taken because there may be dangers in the location that the photographer will need to know about. Another thing to consider would be to get permission when taking a photo of an object, building or location, this is so when taking the photograph you are aloud to do so.

Legal and ethical considerations
  • Copy write- Copy write means having the right to make copies of a piece of work, meaning getting permission from the creator for their intellectual property. This is important because if you copy something without the creators permission, by law they can get sued for 'stealing' the idea.
  • Model Release- Model release is a legal release signed by the photographer or creator of a photograph giving permission to release it to the public. For my project I will need permission to be able to take photos of the building that make Sheffield like Forgemasters and I will gain permission by either going to the council to ask if I can take the photo or to go to the building and talking to the manger and get permission off them.
  • Public Space- The public space that I will be planning on using are roads, footpaths and a public building where people have access to freely walk but when taking photos here I have to be careful that I don't take a photo with a persons face in without them giving permission.
  • Misrepresentation- A misrepresentation is a false statement like stereotypes like religion, race, age or gender. It is important that I do not do this because I don't want people to think my piece of work is based on using stereotypes to make my photo.

Contingencies
My back-up idea if this one does not go to plan is portrait of my family tree, this will be my identity. For this idea I will be taking photograph of the oldest members of my family to the youngest and putting certain parts of their faces together to show the resemblance of each member and for this I will either use the standard kit lens or a macro lens to I can capture the detail within the faces.

Task one initial ideas

These are my three ideas for my photography unit, I had to think of three ideas then out of all of them i had to pick one and i picked Sheffield's famous landmarks.

Copyright, permissions, legal and ethical LO2

Copyright:

Copyright means having the right to make copies of a piece of work, meaning getting permission from the creator for their intellectual property. This is important because if you copy something without the creators permission, by law they can get sued for 'stealing' their idea. The law that you would be breaking is Copyright Infringement if not getting permission.

I will need permission for the photographs I take if people are in it or if a company name will appear on my pictures.

Permission and release forms

  • Making sure when taking the picture to frame it so that the object of importance I'm wanted to take a picture of will only be in that picture.
  • Time of day to take the picture to avoid people been in my image, which means I wouldn't have to get permission.
  • Gaining permission is not just about getting permission to take picture of people/models it is also getting permission for using certain locations like company building, private land or on private land.
  • Make sure the location that you are wanting to use is either public or private by looking it up.
  • Avoid using telephoto lens in public because it is always in focus even from a distance, if using it and not getting permission it can get you in to trouble.
  • Be careful not to take picture in public places of children, NO!

Who is in the photograph?&Is it public or private land?

Legal and ethical
The reasons we have to think about representations in our photographs is because:
  • Don't want to misrepresent a certain social group due to stereotypes (race, religion, age, gender, class, ability, disability).
  • Your model needs to be happy with what you have taking, if they don't like it then take it again and they will know what your intensions of the photograph is going to be used for.
  • Don't want to re-enforce stereotypes especially in a defamatory way (a very negative way).

Shot type and Angles
The angle that has been used on this photograph is a eye level angle, we know this because we are looking at him head on and the shot that is used is a wide shot so the audience can see what is going on in the background. However the background is out of focus which is called shallow depth of field, this is trying to tell the audience that the motorbike is going very fast and the picture has been clearly captured with them still moving.

Equipment
When taking a picture like this the photographer Bob Martin will use a tripod because if he held the camera in his hands even the slightest movement will ruin the picture and make everything out of focus. This photograph has been taken with a camera with a fast shutter speed which is shown by the subject/person, they are in focus and aren't blurry.

Framing
The framing for this photograph is a wide shot, we know this because we can see everything that is happening within the shot. The thing that is used to frame the main focus of the photo is the dirt and the seating in the background, this is to make sure that all of the viewers focus is on the people riding the dirt bikes.

Lighting
The lighting that is shown within the picture is not natural lighting it is lighting within a arena which is high-key. The arena has to be high-key so the audience can see clearing what is happening within the event and they are not struggling to see because it isn't bright enough.

Meaning

The meaning of this photograph is to show the audience that the people riding the motorbikes are going really fast and I think he is trying to show everyone how he can capture a picture of the speed that they are going with focus on them. It also connotes excitement because of the way the motorbike and rider is positioned and angled.

Composition

The composition of this photograph applies to the rule of thirds, this means that there is 4 Focal points within the picture that people immediately look at. On one of the focal points there is the man and on another one there is the motorbike which connotes him been a professional dirt bike racer.

Shutter speed
The shutter speed that has been used within this photograph is a fast shutter speed 1/150th of a second, this was used to freeze a fast moving object.

Aperture
The aperture of this photo would be a wide aperture like f5.6 so there is enough light that is been let through to the iris, the iris is what controls the light when entering, It is also a wide aperture because it is shallow depth of field.

ISO

The ISO for this photograph might be 400-800 which is fairly low, this is because the location where the photographer is, its bright but not to bright which will give more light in.

Orientation:

This image is landscape and this is shown through by the riders, the riders show that the photograph is landscape because they are leaning to one side and if it was portrait it would cut half of their bodies off.

Landscape photographer:
Peter Watson

Photographic Category:
Peter Watsons is a famous English landscape photographer who started in his teens when he photographed and produced his own black and white prints in his own improvised darkroom. He is famous for publishing landscape photographs in the UK and internationally.

Purpose:

The purpose of Peter Watsons Photographs is to make books that will help people when they are looking to do landscape photography for themselves. He is now currently a lecturer and tutors workshops and is the author of not just one but several books which are 'Light in the landscape - a photographers year', 'Seasons of landscape', 'The welsh coast' and 'Views of the landscape'. Peter Watsons photograph will most likely be used in holiday brochures to show people the wonders of the place where they are visiting which connotes excitement.

Shot type and Angles:
The shot that is use within this photograph is a wide shot this is shown by the amount of land that the viewer can see. The angle hat is used for this photo is the eye-level shot, this is used because the photographer wants to show not what is in the background but everything
that he can see in front of him, it make the shot seem like the audience is there looking at it for themselves. When taking these kind of photographs with wide shots most photographer use something which is called the rule of thirds, this is where they have a grid on the camera which helps to compose a balanced image, but some photographers don't need the grid on the camera because they already have a visual in their head of how the picture should be composed.

Equipment
When taking a wide shot photograph like this a tripod is used, this is so he can get a clear photo within it been obstructed by the shaking of his hands/arms. He will also be using a camera that has wide focus so nothing is blurred in the foreground or the background, this is to show everything clearly.

Framing

The framing of this photograph is a wide shot and this is shown throughout the image. It is shown in the image by the audience been able to see what is in the foreground and the background. The framing for this photo is the foreground which is water and rocks and the blue sky in the background.

Lighting

The lighting in this image will be natural lighting because the picture is of nature outdoors and not of an object or a person in a studio. This shot would be high-key lighting, this is shown through the amount of light that is shown within the image.

Meaning

The photograph shows a famous mountain in Scotland and the land that is surrounding it. This shot is took with the rule of thirds and is trying to tell people that something that no one usually visit has made its own beauty and is not be tampered with. He also might be telling the audience that nothing is to small or to big to tackle and that everything is the same.

Composition
The composition of this photograph is the mountain in the background and the rocks and water in the foreground, what has been used to compose this photograph is the rule of thirds.

Shutter Speed
The shutter speed that would have been used within this photograph would have been the average shutter speed which is 1/125th of a second, this is to make sure the photo is not under exposed or over exposed because natural light is been used.

Aperture

The aperture that would have been used within this photo would have been used is f5.6 because there is enough natural light let in to see all the detail of the mountain and surroundings.

ISO:

The ISO for this piece would be 100-400 which is low and this is because the surrounding of the location that the photographer had chosen is bright which means the ISO needs to be  less sensitive.

Orientation:

The orientation for this piece is a landscape image, this is shown by the amount of the location/landmark that ca be seen. In the foreground there is water and rock and in the background a bit mountain, this connotes calmness and relaxation.

Portrait Photographer:
Lee Jeffries

Photographic Category:
Lee Jeffries is a photographer that lives in the United Kingdom who used to photograph sport until the incident he had in London when running the marathon. After the encounter with the little homeless girl living on London's streets he was influenced to change what he was going to photograph. He is now going around Europe and the United States photographing homeless people and getting to know them whilst doing so. The reporter says about this change in a interview 'Now, his portraits are open books, each one almost penetrating you with the tale of that someone gazing right back at you.'

Purpose:
The purpose of Lee Jeffries work is to sell the work to people that are interested in art, used in newspapers/news reports and he is making a book with all of his work in it.

Image Analysis:
https://guliverlooks.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/lee-jeffries3.jpeg

Shot type and Angles
The shot type that is used for this photograph is a close up, this is to emphasise the emotion and to show detail within the homeless mans face. Something that is most common when using close ups is shallow depth of field where the background is out of focus and all of the focus of the camera is on that one subject. The angle that has been used is the eye-level angle, this has been used because when taking a picture with this it is trying to show the audience how they would see the man in real life, it is more neutral than most angle shots.

Lighting
The lighting of this photograph is high-key lighting which is where the lighting that is used is bright, this is shown within the mans face because we can see the detail within his face and the detailed emotions, emotions that I see within his face are no caring about what happens in life, he may feel like he is at his all time low because he is homeless and nothing else that happens could make him feel more worthless than he already does. Also the lighting within his face enhances that lines within his face to show the audience that he isn't as young as he used to be and it also enhances the colour of his eyes with connotes him been unique, this is because most people of a different race to him usually have green eyes but it is less likely for a man of his ethnicity to have such bright coloured eyes.

Meaning

The meaning of this photograph is to show that people are unique in their own way and that everyone is the same on the inside but are different on the outside because of appearances like eye colour or skin colour. He may look the same but he is homeless which means most people may think he doesn't have a place in society but Lee Jeffries thinks otherwise.

Composition

The composition of the photograph is the man in on the right hand side of it which draws the viewers attention that way. The other thing that also draws the viewers attention is the colour of his eyes and the fact that he is smoking, this is because his eyes are a vibrant colour and the end of the cigarette is lighting up as he is taking a drag of it.

Shutter speed

The shutter speed that will have been used within this photograph is an average speed which is 1/125th of a second, this is to create a still clear image.

Aperture

The aperture that will have been used within this photograph will have been a wide one like f4, this is to let enough light in for the exposer of the picture, it will be a wide one because the natural lighting is low-key which means not a lot of light will be let in to the iris.

ISO

The ISO for this photograph could be 400-1600, this would make the camera more sensitive to light which is what needs to happen because the place that the photograph has been taken is dull and doesn't have a lot of light.

Orientation

The orientation of this piece is portrait and this is shown by the close-up that the photographer has used and the amount of background that the audience can see.

Shot Types and Angles
The shot type that has been used within this photograph is a wide shot, this shot is where the audience can see what is not just in the foreground but in the background as well. The angle that has been used in this photograph is a eye level shot, this is where the shot is aligned perfectly with peoples eye line when looking at it.
This photograph has been photo shopped and this is shown through the superimposing of her face in the background, they have made it look like a cloud in the background by tuning the opacity down and making it look less visible to the audience.

Equipment
The equipment that will have been used within this photograph is a camera with a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second and an aperture  of f22 which is small to create deep depth of field and a tripod to hold the camera still so there is not blurs in it by the movement of the photographers hands.

Framing
When doing a photograph like this the framing will be the natural surrounding, the framing of this photo is the rocks around and the water. The framing is to make the audience focus more on what is of importance in the model itself.

Lighting

The lighting used within this photograph is natural lighting in the background because has not been taken in a studio and the woman in the picture has been taken with high-key lighting, the picture of the woman has been took within a studio then edited onto the background.

Meaning
The meaning for this photograph is to show the audience that what people are wearing can be as beautiful and as breath-taking as nature itself. It is saying that it is not what you wear but how you wear it that makes it look as good and vibrant as nature.

Composition
The rule of thirds is used within this picture this is shown by the way the background is laid out; the sea, the rocks and then the sky. Then the woman is stood within the grid with her shoulders and hands on the focal point of the photograph.

Shutter speed
A fast shutter speed will have been used for the background, a fast shutter speed like 1/150th of a second will have been used to freeze the quick moving waves splashing of the side of the rocks. For the picture of the woman a average shutter speed like 1/125th of a second will have been used because she is still and is not moving.

Aperture
Aperture controls how much light is let into the photograph, the aperture that will have been used for the picture of the woman will have been small like f11 to let in enough light for the right amount of exposure. For the background the photographer wanted to create a deep depth of field to make the audiences attention focus on the important thing within the photo, the model.

ISO

The ISO for this photograph will be low which will be 100-400, this is because the location is bright and only a little light needs to go into the camera so the photograph doesn't become over exposed.

Orientation
The orientation of this is landscape and this is shown by the amount of landscape that the audience can see.

LO1- Questions For Sport Photographer Duncan Philpot

1. What/who inspired you to do sport photography and how did they do that?
2. Who helps you to get your images out to the public at the quality that they are.
